The helmet

The motorcycle helmet is the most important accessory.  In fact, the helmet should not be categorized as an accessory, because accessories are something you can optionally add.  No, the helmet is mandatory by laws of common sense.  It matters more than whether or not you will get a ticket, it can save your life.  Therefore, the helmet is a part of the motorcycle, just like the breaks or the wheels.

Without wheels you cannot go anywhere; it is impossible.  Well, it's the same with a helmet.  It is impossible to go anywhere without a helmet.  Your life and your loved ones will thank you.

The helmet's job is to protect the rider's head, cushioning it against the ground or natural obstacles in case of a fall.  It also protects from abrasion and burns that sliding across the pavement can cause.

There are different types of helmets (half-shell, full-face, fiberglass, carbon, etc.), but all of them should be approved by the European Union to be used with total assurance.  Always remember that the helmet should be fastened at all times.  As good a helmet as it is, if it's not fastened, you can lose it in the fall.

The Helmet

The helmets demonstrated as most secure are the full-face helmets, since they equally cover the head and chin.

Speaking of characteristics, we are going to list the qualities a helmet should possess, as a general rule:

  • The helmet should adjust well to your head and turn with it, not independently.  The topic of the helmet size is another tricky issue: when you buy it, it should be tight without choking you.  Helmets are known to stretch a little over time.
  • After a fall, the helmet should be switched out for another one.  Even if it appears not to be damaged, the helmet might have lost efficiency and may put you at risk in the future.  Also, even if you haven't experienced a fall, a helmet should be switched out every 4 to 5 years.  Remember, this is for safety reasons.
  • And, of course, try not to skimp on costs or allow yourself to be guided by price more than by safety.  The helmet can save your life and that's worth more than money.  You should not look for the most attractive or most economical helmet, but for the safest.
